Life is funny that way

Image
Been lamenting for awhile now that since AA canceled their route to Colombo, been wanting to go . I missed out on a chance to visit the beautiful Sri Lanka cheaply. By accident I was looking through their usual EDM and I spotted Colombo in the list - yes, its back and its very cheap. Right now it's about figuring out when to go. Decisions, decisions, decisions. swiped from Manhunt International - Madura Peiris from Sri Lanka it seems

Why going cheap is not necessarily good

Budget airlines - they changed the whole travel industry and now everyone indeed can try and fly. It's actually opening up possibilities to many people who would only dream that they can visit certain places and countries and I am certainly not a snob when it comes to transportation. After all, ,my car is already nearly 10 years old and its all about savings for me. Take away comfort and luxury, just give me savings. However thanks to this recent trip, I have learned alot. I used to think that people who complained about them are not being realistic and some of them are true while others have merit. 1. Savings for who? - while it's true that they ripped out all the luxury so that whatever savings can be channeled back to your ticket, it begs the question though if it's really savings. For example, all their flights (cheap ones) esp are during god forsaken hours and taking transport like taxi to get to the airport usually means midnight or early morning surcharge. For tho...

Trip of a lifetime

Image
I know how everyone will call certain trips as trip of a lifetime but this is certainly one of them. Too tired to talk about them now - backpacking in your 30s is not easy esp when you are not fit. So, here we have a highlight from each area that I visited. For now.

Taking an even longer break

Image
By the time this post is up, I will be away for more or less 11 days. This has been planned since June I believe and long time coming. I have traveled very little by my own and this will be the first major trip that I will be doing alone. To be honest, there's more excitement than fear - perhaps the fear will come much later but who knows. Everyday is an adventure I guess. It's not easy traveling alone too - looking out for yourself even more than you would usually do and also trusting your own judgment in many areas of decision making. But everything will be fine. I think. Now to Laos and Vietnam then.

Losing it at Yogyakarta

The fact that this part of Indonesia eludes the dangers of overcrowding from tourists is beyond me. This place is beautiful, historical (I don't need to talk about the ancient and many UNESCO heritage sites though some people I know doesn't even know what it is and why it exists) and extremely affordable. But what's more important are the people - kind, warm and generous. Nicest people I've meet during all my travel and just as good as the Taiwanese. It's not hard to lose your heart to such a place, lost between time and culture and mainly frequent by the locals. Oh, I don't have to talk about how good the food was - it's beyond words. Deception

If you have not heard of the term Catfish, I suggest that you check it out. To be honest, it's not really a term but rather a title of a movie and then an MTV series highlighting online relationships that are usually not what it seems. Some are honest, mainly there's fabrication. I am not talking about any form of relationship, I have none at this point but recently someone tried and reach out to me. I won't go into the details because I don't want anyone copying it and I don't mention how I found out about this deception in case someone learning from it and try to sharpen their skills. Whatever it is - instinct - there's the feeling that something is not right from the beginning have been bugging me and that is what I learnt from this. Always trust them. The other lesson is about how these people would use your biggest weaknesses to try and play on it - if it's vanity, they will say you look great and cute or if you are desperately lonely, they will off...

Counting down to Yogyakarta

Only 4 more working days and then I am off. As with many of my trips, alot of them are done last minute and based on the cheapest flight. Might sound great to be going for one trip after another and then another but it is actually quite whack. I need to get my cough in check and plenty of rest - resisting going out and eating like a grandfather. But like all things in life, you learn and I learnt that I need to take things slowly. Must drink plenty of water and take care of myself. Credit: http://world-hunk.blogspot.com/

Thailand - can you ever get bored of it?

Image
I've never though I will say this but - yes it's getting very tiring and predictable. At least at the major tourist areas anyway. There is virtually no more surprises after having been there so many times and to some, it's comforting.. But things are not usually for the better, things have no choice but to be more expensive, places are now more crowded when it used to be quiet. Which is why I enjoyed Lipe. Just enough dose of everything. Time to venture to other more remote islands. As for now, this Krabi trip was like an old friend - it has changed, it's nice while it lasted and you always talk about back in the days.

Memories of Manila

Day 1  Hostel check in (with the jam and the delayed timing with Zest Air, reached at 4-5pm) Malate Church - just to have a look see Baywalk Dinner at Aristocrat Restaurant at Malate Drinks around Malate area - too many girlie bars in the area Day 2  Woke up early to have breakfast at the hostel Walked up to the Quirino station and stop at Central Terminal Got lost and finally reach Intramuros - visited Casa Manila, St Augustin Church and Museum, Manila Cathedral was closed for repair, walk around the old town area until Fort Santiago. It rained like mad and had to take shelter in a cafe. Walked out to Rizal Park and back to hotel via United Nations station. Went back hotel to freshen up before we hit the stations again. Dropped down to take a jeepney to Divisoria Night Market. Nothing much to see there and had dinner at one of the roadside stalls. Day 3  Took a train to Edsa station and then exchange over to Ayala. It's quite a distance away to reach Gre...
