Breaking down Japan

To quote unquote a colleague who has been there like 3 times but each time to experience different sides of Japan (cause thats the kind of traveler we are) - only those who have not been there will complain that Japan is expensive. So let's have a look


Stuff you can't control*
MAS return flight - 895

Hiroshima accommodation - 108.33 (discounts due to staying at their sister's hostels in Kyoto and Osaka)
Haruka Limited Express (airport express) + icoca - 127.95

Stuff that you can control*
Train, buses and transport (not covered by Japan Rail Pass) - 283.72
Food - 597.93
Entrance fees for temples/etc - 78.40
Laundry & Towels - 14.10
TOTAL:   974.15

Stuff that you don't really need
Kyoto Baum cake - 52.92
Mont Bell hat for future travek  - 72.11
B mobile Internet Access - 132.38
GU (clothes and such) - 84.12
Micro Fiber Towel from H&M (future travel use) - 38.10

What I saved on
Taxi to KLIA - fetched by my sister
KLIA to home - use my Citibank PremierMiles card to redeem free taxi

GRAND TOTAL: RM 4,381.17
AVERAGE per day for the basics: (2,591.81+974.15/12 days=) RM297.16
AVERAGE per day for indulgence: (4,381.17/12 days=) RM365.10

All said and done, I met my target of doing everything under RM4K if I didn't have to spend on those darn souvenirs. I am quite proud of myself despite over budget by RM381.17.

NARA: Todaiji Temple, Nara Park, Toshodaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, Yakushiji Temple
YOSHINO: Mt Yoshino
OSAKA: Osaka Castle
HIROSHIMA: Peace Park, Peace Museum, Hiroshima Castle
HATSUKAICHI: Miyajima, Itsukushima Shinto Shrine

In 2012 I visited Osaka, Kyoto and Nara for 6 nights under RM2,500 plus food, airfare and souvenirs etc. Have fun!
